4 Out Of 5 Dentists Say... America Is On The Wrong Track
Or at least 4 out of 5 Americans do, according to a poll published in the New York Times (no, I won't link them... I'll tell you why in a second).
A majority of Democrats and Republicans, men and women, residents of
cities and rural areas, college graduates and those who finished only
high school say the United States is headed in the wrong direction,
according to the survey, which was published on The New York Times' Web site.
I'm going to call bullshit on this one without even seeing the data,
the questions, the demographics, or anything besides the fact that it
comes from the New York Times. This is the same journalistic rag that divulged a secret program for tracking terrorists that was vital to our national security. This is the same journalistic rag that pimped the Plame fiasco/non-outing of a CIA desk-jockey whose asinine husband bragged she was in the CIA. This is the same journalistic rag that has lied about the economy, lied about the Administration, lied about Iraq, lied about the military, and kept lying over and over again anytime they thought it would further their leftist agenda.
I won't ever link them unless I absolutely have to. I won't buy their paper, read their website, or believe anything they say or write. They have zero credibility and should be bankrupt financially since they're already morally bankrupt. With their declining readership, the financial part is coming soon and I will toast their demise.
Actually, I believe this one. Problem is, of those who think we're moving in the wrong direction, roughly 50% think we need to move righter and 50% think we need to move lefter.
It's like all those approval polls of Bush they used to trot out. You were supposed to infer that everyone who was unhappy with Bush thought he was too conservative. But how many of us were frustrated with him because he was not conservative enough?

I understand that completely, but the story implies that there are specific reasons: The survey comes as housing turmoil has rocked Wall Street
amid an economic downturn. The economy has surpassed the war in Iraq as
the dominating issue of the U.S. presidential race, and there is now
nearly a national consensus that the United States faces significant
problems, the poll found. That's why I called bullshit, for the very reasons you describe... they take these numbers and say they're so bad because we're unhappy the socialist agenda is being stalled. They don't make the connection that they rose sharply after the 2006 elections brought us "the most ethical Congress ever" and that's a bigger reason to think we're moving in the wrong direction. It's a bullshit survey because it doesn't measure what they're trying to say it measures.

I really don't like the MSM... have I mentioned that?

But They Promised!!
China was awarded the Olympics largely based on their promise to improve their government position on human rights.
"It also betrays promises made by Chinese officials that human rights would improve in the run-up to the Olympics."
In 2001, China promised that if it won the right to host the Games,
"tremendous" human rights improvements would ensue, a pledge repeated
in October by Liu Jingmin, Beijing's vice-mayor and a top Games organiser.
How is that working out so far? Well, let's ask Mr. Hu Jia... what? He's not available? Let's ask his wife then...
Hu's wife, Zeng Jinyan, 24, who recently gave birth to their first
child and is also a prominent rights activist, said the verdict was the
culmination of four years of harassment by authorities.
"He's been put under surveillance, been kidnapped. He's been put under
house arrest and now they have sentenced him to three and a half
years," Zeng told reporters outside the courthouse as she broke down in
tears.
"This is irrational and unfair."
Well that just can't be... the Chinese government promised they wouldn't do things like that anymore. What do they have to say about it?
Mugabe Concedes Defeat
In Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe finally conceded defeat in the recent elections.
"Mugabe has conceded to his closest advisers, the army,
police and intelligence chiefs. He has also told his family and
personal advisers that he has lost the election," Business Day
quoted an unidentified source as saying.
Earlier a ZANU-PF official said Mugabe, facing a fight for
political survival after the worst election setback of his long
rule, would contest the runoff.
Referring to the politburo meeting, a senior party member
told Reuters: "I have no doubt the resolution will be in favor
of a run-off, I have no doubt about that.
"We cannot just hand it to Morgan (Tsvangirai) on a silver
platter. We will fight for it and we will win."
Best Post Of The Day
I don't care where else you go on the web today or what anybody else writes about... go over to S. Weasel's and read today's entry. Stoaty always has a good column, but this is special.

Thank you, Sir. That was indeed special. The fourth anniversary of my parents "leaving" just passed. They were not the type to prank but the situation would have lent itself to that if they were.
That was a very well written post. I shall have to make her blog a regular stop. You have an extraordinary group of readers. Thanks for letting me be a fly on the wall and listen in.

I'm treasuring this time with my parents because we were only able to see each other a few times each year until we moved them up near us. The telephone is not the same, especially since I'm not much for talking on the phone. I'm both sad and happy for you about your parents... sad because we can't keep them forever, and happy that you still keep them in your heart.
Stoaty always has good stuff, well worth checking out daily. I'm definitely going to set something up like that for when I pass... For The Children!!!
bwahahaha!!!!

Another Home Run From Dr. Sanity
Dr. Pat goes into great detail in her post about the MSM's repeated doom-and-gloom focus on the economy. I've done half-a-dozen posts on this, so I obviously believe it's an important topic. Dr. Pat says many of the same things I have, with a thorough explanation of the psychological mechanisms at work.
The stories, as well as similar coverage in other publications and on
the newswire, were more subtle than that. But make no mistake — the
message is that the Bush-Republican economy is a calamity of epic
proportions.
Definitely worth reading and bookmarking for those times you run across liberals claiming that we're in a recession and heading for a depression.

And there are other views, of course:

This gentleman, by the way, is a corporate lawyer for one of the banks in Manhattan, and seems to be a Republican (or at least, he's stated loud and clear that he has no intention of voting for Obama in November).

Republican, Democrat, or Independent doesn't matter if it makes sense. He does make sense. Maybe he should give a seminar for the MSM reporting staffs? btw, I looked through several of his other posts and while he's clearly Jewish (I couldn't understand half the terms he used, lol), I still couldn't tell what his politics are. I know the Democrats count heavily on the Jewish vote, but I know Jews who are conservative too, so I wouldn't put money on it either way.
Him being against Obama isn't necessarily because he's Republican considering the anti-semitic rantings of Pastor Wright. You know, after 7 years of wrongly forecasting economic disaster, the MSM should probably realize that maybe their "gym memberships" are down for a different reason than they originally assumed. The problem is, they never question their own assumptions.

He posted a couple of months ago that he wouldn't be voting for Obama, although he didn't say who he would be voting for. At any rate, about the time of the NY primary, before the Wright hit the fan.
Don't worry about understanding all the words. I don't get all of them myself. Some are Yiddish, and some are yeshivish. This is a special dialect found only among Orthodox Jews, and consists of using a Talmudic term (not just a Hebrew word, but a Talmudic term with, usually, technical meanings) as often as possible in an English sentence. To construct a parallel, this would be like you, a nurse, telling a non nurse that whenever the button comes off your shirt, you suture it back on.
BTW, last night I thought I would download the Yoo memorandum from the Washington Post website, so I could parse it.(Remember you asked me if I could find statements ex ore equum from the horse's mouth (better not get yeshivish on you) about Administraiton claims to unlimited power? I figured that would be a good place to look.) Discovered when I read it this morning they only made the first 40 pages available, but made it sound like they were posting the whole memo!

I thought they were posting the whole memo as well. Interesting to say the least. You'd think somebody from one side or the other would be making a big deal out of it.
You can always use Latin here. What I didn't pick up in college, I can ask my 14 year old son... he's taking Latin right now. Besides, Google translator is my friend!

Went back and found the rest; they hid parts 3 and 4 under an extra click. Will be sending you an email tomorrow. There are some interesting statements in there. He lays out an argument whose logical result, among other things, is that the UCMJ is unconstitutional, but either he didn't realize what the logic of his argument would end in, or he realized and decided to pretend it didn't. The result is a muddle in some respects. I'll try to explain in the email. Most of the memo is actually a discussion of the law applicable to torture, and it ought to be required reading for anyone interested in that topic. Some blogger or other wondered why it was classified in the first place, and I agree: I don't see anything that needed to be kept secret, and a good deal which would have clarified the torture discussion when it was the hot topic.

I can think of two plausible reasons it might have been classified without even having read it. First one, to force al-Qaida to wonder what the policy was. Second one, because these folks love to classify stuff so they feel important (and by these folks, I mean politicians... of all parties).
I'll look forward to the email when you get a chance to send it. If you're interested, we could collaborate on a post about it after giving it a thorough review. I bet that between us we could put together something exceptionally good.

More Good Stuff From doubleplusundead
As usual, dpud skewers leftist talking points and serves them up as BBQ. Of course, when the points don't really know what their point is supposed to be, it's almost self-fisking. I love the gun graphic and caption.
Be sure to check out the moronosphere links too. Look for the Daily Dollop link (that's just the main site... go to dpud and find the link I mean... seriously... it's almost halfway down... yes, that one... :sigh:... now click it!... right... now check out the reading level of your favorite blogs... no, not this one, I don't write to show intelligence, I write to be understood, big difference... now come back here and start going through the archives or I'm going to start posting more Tron videos... plzkthx)
I'll Be Right Back... I Have To Go To The Bathroom -- Part 2
There must be a new and devilishly clever chapter to the al-Qaida manual on escape and evasion. A disturbing trend since I reported this in a post back on the 9th of March.
Sidna, 26, had just finished a round of
questioning Wednesday at the capital's courthouse when he asked his
guards for permission to go to the bathroom. A witness said the guards
allowed him to go into the stall by himself, but did not guard the
doorway. When he re-emerged, Sidna ran for the courthouse's exit and
quickly blended into the crowd outside.
I really should forward these posts to the guards at Guantanamo... just in case. (Yes, that's sarcasm)
How Dare He Judge Them?
Try to inject a little advice in the courtroom while respecting a suspect's delicate sensibilities and what do you get?
"I didn't want to appear to be condescending,
talking them down," Arrington told Atlanta radio station WSB. The
judge, who has been on the bench for six years, noted that he grew up
on inner-city streets in Atlanta. Arrington says he urged people in the
courtroom to take a hard look at their lives.
He
says his message was "Get your life together, get in school, you can be
a better you if you work hard." Arrington says his message was
essentially the same that comedian Bill Cosby has made.
You get to apologize. Notice that the judge is black also, not that it should really matter. Next time, he should just apologize for making them take time out of their busy criminal schedule to come see him.
China And Misdirection
The biggest reason for this:
A Chinese decision to provide information for use
in the agency's attempts to probe Iran's purported nuclear weapons
program would appear to reflect growing international unease about how
honest the Islamic republic has been in denying it ever tried to make
such arms.
Wu provided no details or evidence. He used the
term "gan si dui," a rarely used phrase directly translated as
"dare-to-die corps." The official English version of his remarks
translated the term as "suicide squads."
Wu said police had arrested an individual who he
claimed was an operative of the "Dalai Lama clique," responsible for
gathering intelligence and distributing pamphlets calling for an
uprising.
Sites are added to the Moronosphere and Gerbil Nation blogrolls by request. I got everyone on there who was there when they were made, so email me if you know of a new addition. Some of these are on the main blogroll as well and will remain duplicated.
The main blogroll is at my own discretion. I gratefully accept suggestions by email, but I don't do blogroll exchanges. If a site is there, it's because I personally recommend it. If it's one that is not updated often, check out the archives and you'll probably see why it's there. I will rarely remove a site from the main blogroll once it's there.
