Iranian Teen May Get Asylum

In an earlier post, I mentioned the Iranian teen who applied for asylum in the UK because he feared being put to death if deported back to Iran.  The Iranian government found out he was gay after interrogating his boyfriend (before they hung him).  After his initial application for asylum was denied, the teen fled to the Netherlands to avoid deportation.  The Netherlands denied his application for asylum on a technicality... because the UK also belongs to the EU and the teen had already applied for asylum with them.

Now, it looks as if the UK may grant the asylum application after all.

"Following representations made on behalf of Mehdi Kazemi, and in the light of new circumstances since the original decision was made, I have decided that Mr. Kazemi's case should be reconsidered on his return to the U.K. from the Netherlands."

Of course, the "new circumstances" are not the details of the teen's story so much... they're that the story is now getting attention.  The original application for asylum already had the facts and denied the application anyway.  If this hadn't gotten the attention it did, this kid could already be on his way to Tehran looking forward to his "day in court".

You Might Be A Taliban If:

Check this out over at Ace's.  It's hilarious and some of the the comments are inspired.  Add your own if you're feeling creative.

My favorite so far:

You consider television dangerous, but routinely carry explosives in your clothing.

Enjoy!

Reason #28.7M Not To Use Banks

Two sisters in Japan are accused of trying to evade 28.7 million dollars worth of inheritance taxes by keeping the assets from their deceased father's estate in the garage.

Their father, who was in the real-estate lease business, died in 2004, leaving $72.9 million to his family.

So over one third is supposed to go to the government?  I'm definitely for getting rid of inheritance taxes now.  The government didn't do anything to earn that money and it's already been taxed by the Japanese government.  Why should any government profit from someone dying?

You might think the guy would have planned better though... I mean, cardboard boxes in a garage?  Come on!!  I would have built my own bank and then let the government try to figure out my estate.  Heh.

Another Case Of "Can This Possibly Be Real?"

A 35-year-old woman in Kansas sat on the toilet for two years and nobody called for help?  Even if the boyfriend was stupid enough to let it go on that long, does she not have any family that would have worried about her?

"She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just physically stuck by her body," Whipple said. "It is hard to imagine. ... I still have a hard time imagining it myself."

More than "physically stuck"... apparently her skin had grown around the seat which had to be removed with a prybar so she could be taken to the hospital.  My wife thinks I sit around too much sometimes... wait until the next time she says something.  This is printed and just waiting as part of my defense strategy.

The Age-Old Question: Ginger vs Mary Ann

Most guys have asked or answered that question.  Now, Mary Ann has a new opponent:

DRIGGS, Idaho - Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann on "Gilligan's Island," is serving six months' unsupervised probation after allegedly being caught with marijuana in her car.

So now it's "The State vs Mary Ann" and it looks like she lost.  The 69-year-old actress had several charges dropped as part of a plea agreement, including one for driving under the influence after she failed a sobriety test.  Talk about busted images.... sigh.

Exit question:  They have marijuana in Idaho?  Really?

All Points Bulletin

Residents of a small town in Argentina are afraid to go out at night because of a short character with a pointy hat.  According to this story, the "creature" has only been seen when it's dark out.  Check out the video at the link before going below the fold:

Warning:  The only known image of the creature captured during the fading daylight hours may be too intense for some readers.  Please use good judgment before clicking "more"

Anti-Link Roundup

Ok, not really anti-link, but stories that people on other conservative blogs are talking about and which I have little interest in commenting on (and why, heh).  I should mention that there's nothing wrong with covering these, it's just not my cuppa tea, ya know?

  • The whole Spitzer story.  I started at Hot Air, but could have done it at Patterico's, Ace's, The Jawa Report, or LGF, among others.  I didn't care when President Clinton got caught, just that he lied about it under oath.  I agree with aphrael, enough is enough.  If you're interested, there's plenty out there without my $0.02 worth.
  • Via Allah, President Bush singing.  Just like the dancing in Saudi Arabia, this type of political crap bores me.  I understand that it's good for relations with whoever... that's why I'll never go into politics.  I don't want good relations (except online of course, heh).
  • There are so many manufactured controversies by this Democratic House and Senate that it's a wonder it still makes even the MSM headlines (no, not really.  A lawsuit over a contempt citation from a subpoena about a legal function of the Executive Branch... feh.  Add in baseball, drinking water, and 99 bajillion other red herrings and you have "the most ethical Congress ever".
  • DRJ at Patterico's think her Word of the Day post is bad... I kind of liked it.  I wouldn't touch this one though.  Just sayin'
  • California nanny-statism profiled over at Patterico's (I know, but I spent a lot of time over there yesterday and today on the Balko post which is definitely worth reading!!  So, technically not part of this post... but go anyway, heh)
These were just a few of the topics You Won't See Here (except the Balko post, I may go more into that later)

Link Roundup From doubleplusundead!

In what looks to become a regular feature, doubleplusundead has gathered up a boatload of interesting links (and threw in one from me just for giggles I guess) from folks who hang about Ace of Spades HQ.

Check it out, you'll thank me doubleplusundead.

California Courts

Over at Patterico's, a co-blogger who does a yeoman's job (that means fantastic work) has an excellent post which characterizes what people object to when they think "activist judges".  DRJ has commented here several times and always has great questions and insight.  Go on over and check out this post... then look for other DRJ articles and you'll see what I mean.

It Starts With The Little Things

You might think this is an attempt to stifle free speech, or an unworkable plan, or even idealistic wishful thinking by Pollyannas.  What it may in fact be is a great first step in regaining civil society.

The little things matter, and no cussing/cursing sets a respectful tone to a conversation.  I try not to curse in my everyday life and mostly avoid it online, although I make the occasional exception.  Having little tolerance for dishonesty, arguments of moral equivalence where none exists (saying Bush = Hitler causes me to automatically dismiss anything else being said), or racist remarks makes it even harder to avoid cursing.  I'll be the first to admit that I don't always succeed.  I do know that any one of my four kids might come across something I write online and I want to be able to say, "Yes, I wrote that." without shame or embarrassment.

Don't get me wrong, hearing someone else cuss doesn't bother me... whether it's just part of how they speak, used to emphasize a point, or just insult me.  Water off a duck's back and all that.  Being in the military for 24 years will bring you in contact with a lot of different types of cussing, some almost artistic in its creativeness.  Emperor Misha over at The Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler and Kim du Toit at The Other Side of Kim are both masterful at skewing liberal idiots.  Creative cussing can be very effective and fun to read, but neither of these gentlemen would ever consider using poor language in front of a lady (I assume this excludes Code Pink and other moonbats, but I did say lady).

Suffice to say, I don't faint at bad language.  I do like this teenagers initiative though, especially when he says that,

"I finally told my friends, `I don't cuss.' And I said, `If you want to hang out with me, you don't cuss.'"

Good for him and I agree.  You can do whatever you like, but if you want to associate with me you have to meet my standards.  If you don't like it, that's ok.  You go your way and I'll go mine.. I know I'll do fine and I wish you well.  If you don't like how I act about something, tell me.  I'll either change or no longer expect that I can hang out with you.  No harm, no foul.  That's how peer pressure works and he now has 10,000 members in his no-cussing club.

Hopefully it will continue to catch on and people can disagree while showing mutual respect.  That's what we're supposed to do all the time, but fail to do all too often.  Save the invective for when it's appropriate and it becomes much more effective.

Just sayin'
