We didn't arrive until around 9:00pm, so I missed much of the hockey game. I'm a huge hockey fan, and have been a Red Wings fan all my life (even when they sucked... I can prove it, I'm a Detroit Lions football fan and they've always sucked!) No problem as I would rather arrive safely of course. Detroit lost 3 to 2, but what I saw was good. I must share part of the blame because I'm certain that my absence from the first part of the game was instrumental in the loss. Sorry boys, the kids have to come first... you understand. It won't happen again though.
My wife was happy in the morning as I made her coffee in the room (I don't drink coffee, so I rarely make it except when I'm staying over to take care of Dad.) The motel was only 4 miles from the Immigration office, but the trip ended up taking a while because of traffic and construction. We still made it in plenty of time. Here's the ranting part... a line of folks outside the door was our first sight of the office. Turns out everybody's appointment for the day was for 11:00am. (rassin' frassin'!!) Once we got in line and made it to the door, the guard at the door said that only one parent could go in. My wife went back to the car and played solitaire while I went in with the girls.
It turns out there was absolutely no reason we both couldn't have gone in. There was room for about 300 people to sit down in there and only about 20 chairs being used. Most of the place was empty because it really didn't take that long. We were done from start to finish in about 30 minutes. There also wasn't any reason it couldn't have been done locally, since they didn't do anything different than here at home when I renewed my CCW.
The bottom line is that the entire day was a (profanity deleted... but it involved farm animals) waste really, except that they have the power to discard your application and make you start over. And they know it. From the very first security guard, to the reception desk, to the workers taking the prints... the condescension/contempt was almost palpable. I fully expect that one day they will screw over somebody who returns with a high-caliber answer to what ails them (no, I don't advocate this... but if the building gets imploded while it's unoccupied... I wouldn't lose any sleep over it but it wasn't me, just sayin'

They seemed to delight in their control, creating fear (some of those people looked terrified as they tried to answer questions that these workers had no need to ask), and treating people like serfs. What should be a simple, straight-forward, and local process is in reality an administrative fiefdom of pompous clerks who fancy themselves kings of the realm. (/rant off)
Afterwards, we went to the Korean BBQ restaurant (it was ok, but my wife's cooking is much better) and the Asian grocery store before coming back home. I am whipped right now and will probably be that way for a few days, but I'm glad it's over with and hope we can get everything finished soon.

(btw, fixed that first word because it's damn near universal far as I can tell)
British immigration authorities are famously horrible: arbitrary, petty and given a great deal of autonomy. There's an appeals process, so you can usually get bad decisions fixed, but they seem to get off on making your life as miserable as possible.
Yes.
I.
Know.

Sorry I'm late to the "next step in the good news" thread.
I'm glad it worked out well in the end...with the exception of all the self-righteous, bureaucratic bastids.

Wait, is this an Andrew Sullivan Syndicated Blog?
Who else would have a fundraiser and then go on an extended vacation?
