Some history... my first exposure to blogs was when Deb Frisch had her meltdown over at Protein Wisdom. I'm not going to link anything to her directly, but if you're not familiar with this psycho, Google and Wikipedia are good places to start. An exceptionally fine man called Sinner started "Don't Hire Dr. Deborah Frisch" to help the academic world avoid a huge mistake in letting this horrible excuse for a human being (and I don't say that lightly) come anywhere near children again.
Eventually, the group that had gathered to assemble sufficient documentation of Deb's craziness decided that they really liked being together and didn't need a shared revulsion of Frisch to continue doing so. Sinner started teh Wheel, named after Frisch called the DHD'ers a bunch of gerbils. Thus was born the Gerbil Nation. It's no longer about Frisch in any sense other than she occasionally stops by and spews venom from between alcohol-numbed lips.
You won't find a finer group of folks and everyone is treated with the respect they deserve. Snark is good-natured and taken as such. Future posts will probably mention many of the truly talented and intelligent gerbils who include writers, lawyers, teachers, nurses, computer folks, and just about every occupation you might name. I will also profile a few (with their permission of course) to give everyone an idea of how high-quality the membership is.

I would readily accept that we three pretty much established the Midnight Oil. Our Harper was the Heart and Soul, Sir Machinist supplied the Brains and Honor, and I was the Comic Relief. It does bring me great joy to see how confident you both have become in your web presence... Thread Masters and Snark Throwers extraordinaire!!
I mean that in the best way of course. I, and I'm certain many others would agree, get a kick out of the occasional snark from either of you, mostly because we know you could only do that with people you trust. As Gentle Mac said in another venue, none of us who remain are hothouse flowers, but neither of you would be caught dead participating in the typical internet snark on another site... to your everlasting credit. On more than one occasion I have bitten my tongue and not responded as harshly (or snarkily, if you prefer) as I might have because I knew that one of you might see it and be disappointed.
Thank you both and I hope to remain your GA for all time.
