Sorry For The Light Blogging

Such fun today (/sarc).  The oldest son took our three younger children and two friends to Six Flags and had a great time.  Coming back out to the car (my wife's), they found it had been broken into and some stuff stolen.  Nobody was hurt as the thieves had already left with some electronics, cash, and my oldest daughter's credit card which she had left in there under the seat.  They called me to ask what they should do first and I had them go to the security office to file a report and said I would take care of the credit card.  By the time I had reported it, the thieves had already gotten gas and tried to get cash from three different ATM's.

I'm thankful they're all ok and back home safe now.  The next thing I'd like to see is the newspaper story about how some thieves accidentally drove into a lake and slowly drowned. Does that fit the crime?  Nope.  Do I care?  Nope.  I'd be just as happy to see them get caught and sentenced to an appropriate amount of time in jail.  It's an emotional toss-up right now though because I'm still pretty angry.  Not at the kids... at the thieves who stole more than some stuff, cash, and a credit card.  They stole what should have been a pretty good memory of a pretty good day from my family.

Feh.

1 I am sorry to hear this, Sir. That truly bites. As you say, it's not what they took but what they spoiled. It is a good part of what bothers me about a "not getting caught is the same as being innocent" culture. The effect on the victim of "petty" crimes is  so often out of proportion to what is taken and what punishment, if any, is administered.

2 The money and stuff is easily replaced.  I'm just thankful there wasn't a confrontation where one of the kids might have been hurt.  The oldest is a Black Belt and the youngest is one test away from his.  The two girls are really girly-girls and it was the first time they had ever been to an American amusement park.

Another point of suckage is that you're kind of Catch-22'd in those places.  If you take all your stuff with you, it's liable to be stolen while you're distracted, or lost/broken during a ride.  If you leave anything in the car, you can't be sure it's protected there either.  I can't in good conscience hold the park responsible because there's just too many cars with too many people walking around.  If they stopped and checked everyone who looked out of place, 98% of them would be people who forgot where they parked.

It's not the kids fault for the Catch-22 above.  It's not the Police Department's fault, or the government, or the schools, or the administration.  It's not the fault of anyone except the thieves and they're currently out of reach.  I really hope they get caught... or at least identified from the sunken vehicle.  Jerks.

3 Grrrr...
I'm so sorry this happened. Such things are frightening on a very strange level. A wave of teh wand to your kids, Stash, from Teh Fairy GodGerbil, or whatever I am this week. I feel bad for them.
...and for you, of course! I'm feeling sad for you, too, PapaStash.

4 I agree with sillyblindharper about crime messing with your head in a strange way. I mean, we all know that crime happens, but the world just looks different after crime happens to you.

5 Hi Gabriel,

I grew up in Detroit and am usually prepared for crime to happen to me.  My boys are usually prepared to defend themselves too, the few fights they've been in ended so quickly other kids don't try anymore.  Too embarrassing.  I took the oldest in for his concealed-carry permit, which should be in this week (can't get one until you're 21 here, we went the day after his birthday).

Not much phases me and the kids have taken it well, so it's likely to turn out a good lesson in the end... no matter how careful you are, it can still happen.  It just makes me angry that some people think this is acceptable.  The greed and selfishness of theft makes me wonder how they can live with themselves.  It's self-demeaning, only worthy of contempt from others, and ultimately doomed to fail.  Keep doing it and you'll eventually get caught.
