Brown Will Not Attend Olympic Opening Ceremonies

The Prime Minister of the Britain, Gordon Brown, has announced he will not attend the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics in China.

The confirmation from Brown's Downing Street office means he is the second major world leader after German Chancellor Angela Merkel to do so.

The White House left open the possibility Wednesday that U.S. President George W. Bush might also skip the opening ceremonies, which some world leaders have suggested would serve as a signal of displeasure over China's crackdown in Tibet.

However, Brown's Downing Street office said he was not boycotting the Olympics and would attend the closing ceremony.

An anonymous source in Brown's office said it wasn't a boycott of the Opening Ceremonies either.

Brown has been under intense pressure from human rights campaigners to miss the Aug. 8 opening. However, Brown's decision not to attend was not aimed at sending a message of protest to the Chinese government, the spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity in line with government policy.

She said the decision had been made weeks ago and was not a stand on principle.

"He had never planned to attend," she said. "There is absolutely no change in our position."

Good for Chancellor Merkel and I hope PM Brown will clarify whether his absence is a political statement or not.  I also hope more join in, or even try to out-do each other (total boycott?).  heh.

1 Meanwhile, the city elders of San Francisco decided that the Torch is the equivalent of  VP Cheney:  they sent to an undisclosed location.

But also in SF there were plenty of people who came out to support the the Torch (not sure if they were also supporting the Chinese government too, or just came out to support the Olympics), drawn mostly from the Chinese community there.

2 I think most of the supporters were out there to support the Olympics and because some people like that kind of thing. It's hilarious that the SF folks found a way to piss off everybody who came out and many who didn't. They really don't have a clue about what makes people tick.

My parents loved parades... going in person or even watching them on television. They have more video of the parade at Disney than all their other Disney footage combined.

I hate parades (and Mom & Dad, if you're reading this, I hated Sunday Drivestm that went on for hours without going anywhere too. Just sayin').

They find they are better off without facts. Those churlish facts have a nasty habit of not agreeing with what they PREFER to believe.

5 In many cases I don't give them that much credit. I think too many liberals know their positions suck. That is why they push them on others but evade them for themselves and their families.

No vouchers as public schools are better for kids, but not my kids.

Section 8 housing? We must welcome these people as our neighbors, but not in my neighborhood.

Social security? Not for politicians, are you kidding???

Etc, etc,

6 That's why it's FEELING as opposed to THINKING Sir.  If they had to use reasoning skills, they could never support their own positions.  All they're left with is emotional skills which are a poor substitute for reality-based thought.  Read some of Dr. Sanity's stuff about progressive philosophy's reliance on denial.  It really makes the liberal mindset easier to understand (not agree with or even be able to stomach very long... but understand).

7 I have been meaning to go there and I will. I know many liberals are sincere and while I may disagree and even consider them a threat it is the hypocrites I have contempt for. Do you think Hillary does not know that socialism is a failure? She does not care. It is a means for her to get power.

8 She does not care. It is a means for her to get power.

Preaching to the choir Sir, preaching to the choir.
