Rule Of Law

There are just too many unscrupulous people who use the Rule of Law as cover for their own greed, prejudice, or stupidity.  Vicki No-Veil at The Jawa Report notes the irony of Somalia complaining that France had no right to go after those Somali pirates last month.

"France and Somalia do not have an extradition treaty and French laws are not applicable to crimes committed outside France," said Hussein Mohamed Aidid, chairman of the Eritrea-based Alliance for the Reliberation of Somalia (ARS).

"If the pirates were extradited illegally, like it happened in this case, then they were kidnapped by the French special forces. If the pirates acted against the law, the French should not have done the same.

Next time, the French or whoever should just write off the money and bomb the pirates in place.  What?  They aren't supposed to do that either?  Well, strongly-worded condemnation from the United Nations has always worked b... heck, I can't even finish that one.

The next one is from Vietnam where terrorists from the United States, Thailand, and a domestic member from within Vietnam itself (a traitor!!) are going to stand trial for their crimes.  What barbarous acts of terrorism are they accused of?  Handing out leaflets calling for political change.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Le Dung said at a regular news briefing that all three men would be tried in a court in Ho Chi Minh City on May 13 "on terrorism charges" under Vietnam's criminal code.

Viet Tan, which is outlawed in Vietnam, says it does not support the use of violence and that pamphlets seized by police at the time of last November's arrests promoted peaceful democratic change.

The ruling Communist Party rejects calls for a multi-party system and last year it arrested more than 30 political activists, diplomats and human rights groups said.

Some were put on trial for "spreading propaganda against the state," a criminal offence in Vietnam and handed prison sentences of between three years and eight years.

Chronic speeders, people who use cellphones in movie theaters, and anyone jumping ahead in line at an amusement park are going to be considered terrorists soon.

Both of these stories highlight repressive governments using the Rule of Law as cover to secure their own power and money.  The left accuses the administration of this all the time, yet ignores when it happens for real because they can't blame the United States or the Bush Administration.
