Proof That Bill Clinton Didn't Inhale?

I don't bust on President Clinton often for a lot of reasons, but this reminded me of his famous claim that he "didn't inhale" when he smoked marijuana.  That one busted my incredulity meter.  Pretty cool though if you like weird science stuff.

"I Say To Hell With Them"

Elton John is supporting Hillary Clinton for President and said this at a fundraiser held at Radio City Music Hall:

"I never cease to be amazed at the misogynist attitude of some of the people in this country," he said. "I say to hell with them."

Now, some people are going to try and spin this as anti-American, but that's not strictly true.  It's just anti-"anyone who doesn't want to vote for Hillary" Americans he's talking about.  What would that quote look like if Elton supported Barak Obama?  Let's see:

"I never cease to be amazed at the misogynist racist attitude of some of the people in this country," he said. "I say to hell with them."

Progressive politics at its finest.  Heh.

*Welcome Patterico readers and thanks DRJ for the link.  Feel free to look around, then go on back to Patterico's.  My little blog is (IMO of course) worth checking in on once in a while, Patterico's should be a daily read.  Every day.  You won't regret it.

54 Illegal Immigrants Die During Smuggling Attempt

No, they weren't trying to get into the United States, they were going to look for work in Thailand.

A total of 121 people were crammed inside a container just six metres(sic) (20 feet) long and 2.2 metres(sic) wide, said Colonel Kraithong Chanthongbai, commander of the Thai police station in the border province of  Ranong where the bodies were found late Wednesday.

Twenty one people were hospitalized with dehydration and a lack of oxygen. They appeared to be recovering after receiving intravenous fluids, he said.

The airtight container was normally used to carry frozen seafood.

The article says at least 54 people died, so expect that number to go up.  I didn't know that Thailand was so prosperous compared to Myanmar.

About 540,000 migrant workers are registered to work in Thailand, most of them from Myanmar, according to the labour ministry.

But as many as one million undocumented workers are believed to be in the kingdom, where they often face exploitation by their employers, according to rights groups.

The (Almost) Ideal Watch

Pretty close to what I want from a watch.  Not too bulky, stylish, and has a cellphone built in.

http://stashiu3.mee.nu/images/van-der-leer-mw2-440.jpg

Here is the product page with all the features (and it's got a lot!) in detail.  It's an unlocked phone so you'll be able to use it with any carrier.  No page at Amazon yet, so I'm not sure if there is an easy way to get one here in the United States.

Now if they can just fit in a PDA with holographic projection, I might start wearing a watch again.

Brown Will Not Attend Olympic Opening Ceremonies

The Prime Minister of the Britain, Gordon Brown, has announced he will not attend the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics in China.

The confirmation from Brown's Downing Street office means he is the second major world leader after German Chancellor Angela Merkel to do so.

The White House left open the possibility Wednesday that U.S. President George W. Bush might also skip the opening ceremonies, which some world leaders have suggested would serve as a signal of displeasure over China's crackdown in Tibet.

However, Brown's Downing Street office said he was not boycotting the Olympics and would attend the closing ceremony.

An anonymous source in Brown's office said it wasn't a boycott of the Opening Ceremonies either.

Brown has been under intense pressure from human rights campaigners to miss the Aug. 8 opening. However, Brown's decision not to attend was not aimed at sending a message of protest to the Chinese government, the spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity in line with government policy.

She said the decision had been made weeks ago and was not a stand on principle.

"He had never planned to attend," she said. "There is absolutely no change in our position."

Good for Chancellor Merkel and I hope PM Brown will clarify whether his absence is a political statement or not.  I also hope more join in, or even try to out-do each other (total boycott?).  heh.

Battlefield Lie Detector

This is a great new tool for troops to use when conducting sweeps after an IED attack or ambush.  A portable lie detector:

The Defense Department says the portable device isn't perfect, but is accurate enough to save American lives by screening local police officers, interpreters and allied forces for access to U.S. military bases, and by helping narrow the list of suspects after a roadside bombing. The device has already been tried in Iraq and is expected to be deployed there as well. “We're not promising perfection — we've been very careful in that,” said Donald Krapohl, special assistant to the director at the Defense Academy for Credibility Assessment, the midwife for the new device. “What we are promising is that, if it's properly used, it will improve over what they are currently doing.”

Troops are generally smarter than a lot of people (there's a lot of moonbats, right?) give them credit for.  They'll know this is just a tool and not perfect, but having it give a positive will definitely make them take a closer look at the person suspected of lying.

It would be interesting to see these used in hospitals as well.  I can't tell you how many times I've had a diabetic swear to me that they've been following their diet and the HgA1C result comes back elevated as hell.  Or doing an intake on somebody who swears they don't use street drugs and their urinalysis comes back positive for cocaine and marijuana.  Show them the results and they almost always look down and say, "Yeah, I really didn't mean to lie."  (huh? Isn't that another one?  Yep.)

Now For Something Lighter

I've always liked Rosie Perez and John Leguizamo.  It turns out they are good friends and have a pretty intimate sex scene in the soon-to-be-released movie, "The Take".  What was it like?  According to Rosie:

"It was in the sex scene between husband and wife that things started to go bad. ... It was the hardest scene, very difficult," she said. "I respect him so much and he respects me so much. I know his wife, he knew my husband and introduced me to my boyfriend. It was very awkward. Like brother and sister having to do a sex scene."

How did they get through it?

"It took a lot to go there and be honest," she said. "He has a wonderful marriage, but even in a successful marriage you have times when things are not good and sometimes that plays in the bedroom. And we went for it."

Rosie Perez still looks great, don't you think?

Sorry For The Light Blogging

Such fun today (/sarc).  The oldest son took our three younger children and two friends to Six Flags and had a great time.  Coming back out to the car (my wife's), they found it had been broken into and some stuff stolen.  Nobody was hurt as the thieves had already left with some electronics, cash, and my oldest daughter's credit card which she had left in there under the seat.  They called me to ask what they should do first and I had them go to the security office to file a report and said I would take care of the credit card.  By the time I had reported it, the thieves had already gotten gas and tried to get cash from three different ATM's.

I'm thankful they're all ok and back home safe now.  The next thing I'd like to see is the newspaper story about how some thieves accidentally drove into a lake and slowly drowned. Does that fit the crime?  Nope.  Do I care?  Nope.  I'd be just as happy to see them get caught and sentenced to an appropriate amount of time in jail.  It's an emotional toss-up right now though because I'm still pretty angry.  Not at the kids... at the thieves who stole more than some stuff, cash, and a credit card.  They stole what should have been a pretty good memory of a pretty good day from my family.

Feh.

Telemarketing Troubles (And My Fix)

I had been getting a lot of telephone calls from telemarketers for Medicare supplemental insurance, mortgage insurance, magazine subscriptions, and other things.  They frequently started off by saying that this "is not a sales call" and they just want to "verify some information".  They'll have some bit of real information like, "Do you still live at...?", then follow up with questions about how much insurance I have or somesuch, trying to get me to give up information that they don't really have before going into the full pitch.

I am on the Do-Not-Call list and have made sure my listing was updated.  Apparently it's not working so well anymore, at least not for me.  I've tried many things in the past that ended up being more aggravating than satisfying... prank responses, hanging up, breaking in and saying "Please remove my name from your list", trying to explain that continuing to call someone on the Do-Not-Call list might get them in trouble, all to no avail.  Now, I don't feel like taking anyone to court very often, much less over something like this.  Maybe going through all the hassle of reporting offenders, documenting calls and times, and whatever other nonsense is "recommended" is worth it to some people.  I'm not one of them.

More Terrorists Escape From Prison *UPDATE*

What is so hard about keeping terrorists locked up?  In this story , about nine convicted terrorists who bombed several targets in Casablanca escaped from the prison in Morocco.

The Moroccan Justice Ministry said in a statement that officials discovered Monday morning that the nine had escaped from a prison in Kenitra, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of the capital Rabat, MAP reported.

The ministry said all measures have been taken to find the escapees.

How about some measures to keep these guys from escaping in the first place?  I'm liking the idea of a GPS harness more and more (but no explosives kishnevi and Mac, sorry).

*UPDATE* kishnevi was the one who originally suggested explosives.
